Hotel Soundproofing

soundproofing a hotel

Picture this: You’ve just walked into your hotel room after a long day of working or traveling. The bed beckons you, and sliding under the covers is all you can think about.

Then … noise. The ice machine. The guests next door. Children running up and down the hallway. Even the ding of the elevators. The noise is everywhere.

In fact, recent hotel guest satisfaction surveys have identified noise as a concern for 16% of guests, with 43% of respondents reporting noise problems to hotel staff.

And with over 53,000 hotel properties with almost 5 million rooms servicing about 1.7 billion guests per year, noise problems affect countless hotels and guests, which can adversely affect revenue.

That’s why hotel owners and managers turn to Sonic-Shield for help. Contact us to learn more about how our team of acoustic experts can help you identify the offending noises in your hotel to help you develop and fabricate the appropriate soundproofing materials for your particular needs today!

Types of Hotel Noise

We've helped hotels like Anna Maria Island Beach Resort with numerous sources of noise identified and solved by Sonic-Shield engineers, including:

Walls

Sound from adjacent rooms or hallways can pass through walls and disturb guests. Typical noise sources include loud talking, wall mounted television sets, audio equipment, alarm clocks, and noisy plumbing.

Soundproofing Solution: For new construction of walls, floors and ceilings, we recommend combinations of Sonic-Shield sound barrier material in conjunction with underlayments, absorbent products and the necessary accessories to help break the connections that move vibrations (and the noise they create) through the structure.

For existing structures, our Sonic-Shield barrier materials, when added to a typical wall, can increase the STC of the wall from 33 to over 53, reducing the perceived loudness of the transmitted noise by 75%. Every situation is unique and requires a customized solution to meet the property’s individual needs.

Floors & Ceilings

Walking on hard surfaces, such as tile or wooden floors creates impact noise that can easily pass through floors and disturb occupants below.

Soundproofing Solution: We recommend combinations of sound absorbing underlayment on floors and sound barrier and sound deadening materials to reduce the transmission of sound through floors. Windows

Windows are frequently the weakest point in a hotel room’s soundproof envelope and can transmit the largest amount of noise into hotel rooms.

Soundproofing Solution: Various solutions can be employed to reduce this noise, including the use of acoustic windows and window inserts. Sound dampening treatments in the window mullions, and acoustic caulking or acoustic films applied directly on the window can dampen noise without having to replace the windows.

Doors

Doors are also a point of noise transmission, either between rooms, between rooms and hallways, or between rooms and an outside patio or lanai.

Soundproofing Solution: Door seals and “kits” can be custom fit for existing doors, or solid core doors can be custom made to replace hollow core doors to provide extra soundproofing.

Indoor HVAC Systems

Noise from fans in HVAC systems travel through the ducts and return vents, and may affect every room in a hotel.

Soundproofing Solution: For Indoor HVAC systems, we have developed effective duct and fan silencers that are capable of reducing noise by 15-20 dB, a reduction of perceived loudness by 67-75%. In some cases, we will prescribe the use of acoustical plenums or acoustical wraps on the ducts to eliminate resonance or noise from duct panel vibration, as vibrations generally mean more noise!

Outdoor HVAC Systems, Generators & Pumps

Noise from outdoor AC evaporators can often be heard by guests within the hotel or on outdoor patios.

Soundproofing Solution: We have developed a modular sound deadening system, containing both sound barrier and sound absorption materials, which are capable of reducing the direct transmission of noise to the environment and minimize acoustical reflections off of nearby walls and structures.

Acoustic Reverberation

Highly reverberant rooms cause echoes, which compromise the sound quality, makes speech unintelligible, or results in a “muddy” sound from equipment.

Soundproofing Solution: We have developed our own brand of REVRB® customized acoustical sound deadening panels which can be covered in decorative fabrics that can be installed on walls or ceilings within rooms.

How We’ve Helped Others

Whether prior to new construction or solving for a current noise issue, we have the products and expertise to get the job done. Here are some examples of our work:

Anna Maria Island Beach Resort

Anna Maria Room Artwork

The Anna Maria Island Beach Resort struggled with several noise problems, including adjoining rooms with noise traveling from one room to another through the connecting door.

It was determined that our ‘door kits,’ comprised of a combination of sound barrier material and cut-to-order ‘door sweeps,’ would help mitigate and reduce noise. After testing two kits, they were found to be the exact solution for their specific problem, and 22 more kits were installed to remaining doors.

After saving over $25,000 from not having to replace every door, the resort presented another noise issue: ‘hard and cold’ noise due to tile floors and other hard surfaces in their rooms.

This was addressed with our REVRB® Acoustical Panels, designed specifically with absorbent material contained within a durable wooden frame. Additionally, we worked with the resort’s designers to select specific fabrics and graphics to apply to the panels to match the existing décor for aesthetic consistency and continuity.

Granite State Credit Union

Granite State Credit Union

The Granite State Credit Union had a difficult problem with their reception area. Although beautiful with high ceilings, the hard wall surfaces and ceramic floors made sound reverberate

It was determined that the high level of reverberation was the culprit, so REVRB® Acoustical Panels were strategically installed on the walls to reduce the reverberation to a more comfortable level, and increase people’s ability to understand each other.
